Lyon, France

May 7, 2013 6:45 PM—Lyon

We traveled all day yesterday. We started off at around 7 AM in Barcelona and we eventually made it to Lyon by around 5 PM. We had to take three different trains and we got to see a lot of the countryside. We even saw the snow-capped Pyrenees Mountains from the train.

Once we got here yesterday and got settled we went to dinner. We ended up eating on one of the many barges on the river that are turned into restaurants. Lyon is supposed to be the food capital of France and the one thing we have been doing most is eating. The food there was awesome! We even got dessert there. We split chocolate fondant and formage blanc (basically a piece of chocolate cake and cheese, both with strawberries).

This morning we decided to sleep in. We have been traveling so much and we have been so busy that we are all exhausted. Even I didn't wake up until 9:30 this morning (and that says something). When me and Jill got up and got ready we went to get a late breakfast. We ended up at a little cafe a couple blocks from our hostel where we both got some kind of queish that was also served with salad and some kind of potato/cheese thing. The food there was awesome!

After eating we met up with Matt and we went to find the funicular that takes you up to the neighborhood of Fourvière. This is where the basilica is, which is the key symbol of Lyon. It was an astounding church where we were also able to get some really good views of the city. After we got our fill of the church we took the funicular back down and wandered around the city center for a bit as we made our way back. Lyon has the largest cleared square in Europe so we walked through that and then we walked all the way down the main shopping avenue.

Once we got closer to our hotel we went back to the cafe where we had breakfast and we got more food. It was all so good the first time that we had to have more. This time we got sandwiches and me and Jill both got a pastry. Again, it was all amazing!

By that point we were all pretty exhausted so we hung out at our hotel for a while and then Matt went back to his hotel and me and Jill watched a movie. We are just gonna take it easy tonight so we can be fully prepared for tomorrow which is Matt and Jill's last day with me.

I really like Lyon. It is not touristy at all and I think that is part of what I like so much about it. It was a very nice, chill place to stop for a couple days and take in the culture. We are taking the train tomorrow morning to Geneva. It is only about an hour and a half train ride, so we should have most of the day to explore. Then the next day they fly back home and I'm moving on the Lucerne.
